The land is gently undulating and south-easterly in nature, lying at an altitude of between 120m-135m above sea level. According to the Macaulay Institute for Soil Research (now the James Hutton Institute) the land is classified as grade 3(2). 
The southern part of field 1 was a former quarry reinstated to agricultural land under a Landfill License granted in 1995.
